Ten haiku

Here are some haiku that have piled up. Enjoy.

Sparrows
At the feeder.
Suddenly, a woodpecker

Wind from the North
Cherry blossoms
Flee

Covering a street
The color of winter
White blossoms

Through the new green
Honeysuckle
A startled fawn

Early morning parking lot
Street lights in the fog
An alien armada

Cherry blossoms
Still tight
Holding out for sun

The ghost of winter
Blown by an April wind
Dust devil

The calendar page
Turns
April follows reluctantly

The moon
So large at dusk
Barely lights your face

Wind, sleet
In spite of April
A splinter of winter

Friday, February

We’re all down here
Banging on the cosmic pipes
For someone to please
Turn up the heat

But there’s nobody home
Just confetti drifting down

Must be some hell of a parade

This far north, Winter
Comes like some uncle,
Dearly loved, but always too early
For supper, and staying into the

Small dark hours, full of tales of
Death and sadness,
And there you are, longing
For the break of Spring

Then Summer comes,
And you rush to embrace her
Like an old sweet regret,
Anxious not to screw things up this time,
And cling too tightly

Until finally, inevitably,
She slips away, again too soon.
And Winter says,
I told you this is how it would be.

A winter quartet

I

Daybreak
Orion long since fled,
The new moon cradles the old,
With Venus, that old voyeuse,
Standing watch,
All the sky ablush

II

Temperatures drop slowly
From the unblue, steel-gray sky,
The promise of snow revoked
In response to some
Imagined slight.
Across the low-slung day,
Footprints.

III

Finally, snow,
Fierce and bitter
No longer willing or able
To hold its rage against
The lingering autumn,
At the tress clinging absurdly
To their dead.

IV

A Sahara of snow,
Windblown and duney,
Bereft only of camels,
Piled like so much longing,
Like so many
Cancelled appointments.

A tanka for winter

Bitter snow
A handful of vagrant seeds
Juncos all alight with hunger
In the teapot
Leaves grow cold
