God’s fate

God was in one of his moods
Lightning seared the mountaintops
Bilious gases erupted in the seas
The earth opened and swallowed cities
Whole

Sacrifice a son? For what?
For that pathetic string of snot
Befouling my blue pearl?

Fate, serene, unmoved
Merely kept her gaze
Focused on the navel
Of heaven and earth

You banished them from their birthright
Sent them tumbling, willy-nilly
into the blackness
Of their own hearts
Into deathless ruination
Now some part of your immortal spark
must suffer anguish and die

Alright, alright!
But I’ll make the bastards pay!

Down to the beach

I went down to the beach in sworls
Longing for sun-bound benediction,
The binding waves’ delight

I went down to the beach in fancy,
The souls of a billion stars
Shone in the sand-blown wind

I went down to the beach in breathless,
Red-green ancient charts
New sprung each forgotten day

I lost my footprints
Without a glance

The mirror’s depth

Once upon a dreaming green
By the ocean’s clapping heart
Swayed full with thunder wonder
I saw the river flowing

Change course, dry up
Make islands, golden dreams
Drain fields, ambitions
Unmitigated, oblivious

Winging onward
Like crabgrass, Like dirt
Unbounded
Like winds unhinged

No rhythm so replete as days
Each different, all unchanging
Grief and joy alike
Turn to dross, cheap decoration

You, agent of emptiness, why
This running choice, this still
Cunning, this rumination
Of not ending, not beginning?

I read the universe arose from nothing,
So gone, so not
I try to keep it from slipping shut,
A splendid churl, eyes blinking

Away

Voyager 1 is expected to leave all solar influence behind, and slip into interstellar space soon, very soon. It will be the first man-made object to do so.

An inconsequential piece
Of jetsam
Floats miraculously out
From the sun

Out, out
So long, goodbye

We’ve heaved you gone
And yet you write back
Every day
As if you’d found work
Out there
Beyond the heliopause
Where strange bits of nothingness
Collide ceaselessly.

What do they make of you?
Too smooth, too rough?
Too many kinds of things
patched together
To be of any use to entropy?

I do hope
Things work out for you.

Prayer

You say you embrace God
Your arms entwine emptiness
That distorting mirror
You call God

While you pray
Waiting only for your echo
Longing only for your immortal self
To come out of hiding

The stars are exploding
Forever
